Date Added: May 03, 2008 06:47:21 PM

What comes to your mind when you first think of News and Media? A lot of reporters and journalists holding high end expensive cameras and mikes flocking around a celebrity? If that’s what your idea of media is, you’re not exactly wrong because in these modern times, that is what the media is. However, it wasn’t always the same.

Creation of the various forms of Media took place over time:

Newspapers & Magazines: 1880’s

Movies: 1910’s

Radio: 1920’s

Television: 1945’s

Cable Television: 1980’s

Satellite Television and Internet Digital Communication: Towards the end of the 20th Century

The Radio has probably been the most constant and most popular form of getting news across to people since its creation. It was first developed in 1920 primarily for military use and communication strictly for sending radio messages from one location to another. The president of the RCA at that time: David Sternoff had the idea of selling these radio sets commercially to the masses and individual consumers. However, the customers would need a reason for buying these radio sets at that time, hence launched was the first ever commercial radio station. RCA went ahead to setup radio stations all over the country and then started selling what was then called Radio receivers.

You can now imagine what must have happened next. Between 1920 and 1922, in the span of just 2 years, over 400 radio stations were set up all over the country. Radio stations were also setup by universities, newspapers, police departments, hotels and labor unions.

By 1923, 600 radio stations had been established across the United States along with a record $83,000,000 worth of radio sets sold. The biggest difference between the radio sets before 1923 and after 1923 is that after 1923, advertisements started being heard on the radio, and the radio slowly changed into what it is today.
