History of Basketball

Dr. James Naismith was the original creator of the sport of basketball. He was born in 1861 in Ontario, Canada where he came up with the idea of basketball when he was only young. He created a game at the time where he had to knock a rock off of an object by throwing another rock at it which then advanced to becoming basketball.

Dr. Naismith became a teacher at the YMCA School located in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891 where he ultimately created basketball. He was challenged to make a sport which he can play inside during the winter months. The game would be something which would have to take skill and not just brains. He started with creating a game where he would use a soccer ball as the “basketball” and two baskets as nets.

Dr. Naismith wasn’t only successful for creating the very popular sport of basketball but he also became a medical doctor and stayed focused on sports science but on the side he was even a minister. Throughout his life, he watched the sport he made change and grow to become one of the most popular sports in the world. It even became a sport in the Olympics in 1936 which was hosted in Berlin. Due to this magnificent event, he marked his name in basketball history.
